The Prime Minister’s wife paid tribute to supporters who œclearly love this
great country after Mr Browns dramatic speech outside Downing St on Monday
afternoon.

Mrs Brown, who has more than one million followers on the microblogging
website, posted two messages about the Prime Minister’s announcement that he
was standing down as leader.

”Watched Gordon give his statement at Downing Street this afternoon from
upstairs window and could hear all his words very clearly rising up,” she
wrote.

”Very proud and humbled by all the Tweeters who have send (sic) supportive
messages and who clearly love this great country too.”

Mrs Brown kept voters up to speed with what is happening on the General
Election campaign with regular œTweets or updates on the site.

She also consistently used the internet during the Labour campaign trail to
write blogs about her experiences.

On Sunday, Mrs Brown told her 1.119 million œfollowers that she œhad lovely
24 hour family break in Scotland, glass of wine, sort of a lie in, good to
see many Fife friends at local church now back again.

After Britain got its first hung parliament in 36 years she tweeted: œthank
you for all the great messages today “ good to know that so many people
value what Gordon and Labour have achieved in government..

Mrs Brown has raised her profile dramatically over the last year by tweeting
about her charity work and life in Downing Street, occasionally uploading
photos of herself with celebrity friends but rarely mentioning her husband
or politics.

Making his statement outside Downing Street, Mr Brown said he would stand down
as Labour leader in the autumn and allow a contest for his replacement to
begin now.

By agreeing to stand aside, he removed one of the blocks to any deal with the
Liberal Democrats.
